Early Inspiration and Professional Beginnings

Born in Utah, his journey into the medical field began with a profound personal experience. As a child, he faced illness and was deeply moved by the nurses who cared for him. This early exposure to the compassionate side of healthcare ignited a desire to serve others, leading him to pursue a career in nursing.

Academic Excellence and Specialization

Derrick’s academic journey is a testament to his commitment to excellence. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Brigham Young University-Idaho with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, boasting a remarkable GPA of 3.92. He then earned a Master of Science as a Family Nurse Practitioner from Brigham Young University-Provo, graduating with a GPA of 3.9 in August 2014.
While completing his training as a family nurse practitioner, he worked in pediatrics for nearly five years. His experiences with childhood illness further fueled his desire to serve others, mirroring the care he received as a child.

Derrick’s personal life also significantly shaped his professional path. His family’s struggles with infertility, infant loss, and pregnancy complications inspired a deep interest in women’s health. This led him to specialize further, earning a post-graduate certificate as a Certified Nurse Midwife from Frontier Nursing University in May 2022.

Professional Milestones and Accomplishments

Throughout his career, Derrick has achieved several notable milestones. He is dual board-certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and a Certified Nurse Midwife, a testament to his diverse expertise and dedication to women’s health.

Derrick’s professional journey includes significant roles at various healthcare institutions. Since March 2021, he has been a Certified Nurse Midwife and Nurse Practitioner at Sunrise Women’s Health in Mapleton, UT. He founded a clinic where he provides comprehensive healthcare services to women of all ages. His evidence-based approach ensures high-quality care in primary care, hormone replacement therapy, help with menopause, gynecological services, infertility, midwifery, contraception, and lab assessments. Here, he can genuinely listen to people’s concerns, establish their goals for coming in, and follow up with shared decision-making to accomplish their goals.

Previously, Derrick served as a Student Nurse-Midwife at Wellsprings Women’s Care in Tooele, UT, and Bella Women’s Care in Phoenix, AZ. In these roles, he performed obstetric and gynecological exams, labor management, births, and postpartum care under the direction of seasoned professionals.

Commitment to Education and Community

Derrick’s commitment to education extends beyond his learning. He has presented on topics such as “The Effectiveness of Psychopharmacotherapy” at the 2019 UVU Conference on Suicide Prevention, sharing his knowledge and contributing to the broader medical community.

Personal Life and Interests

Outside of his professional life, he is a devoted family man. Married to Stephanie Pickering for over 17 years, they have three children, including one with special needs. Tragically, Derrick and Stephanie also experienced the loss of twins who were born prematurely and passed away.

These personal challenges have deepened Derrick’s empathy and dedication to his patients.

Derrick enjoys scuba diving, vacationing, and spending quality time with his family in his free time. He finds solace in the great outdoors, often camping and hiking with his loved ones.
